Steamed Lobster Recipe

Steaming is one of the best methods for cooking lobster, as it preserves its natural sweetness and delicate texture. This method allows the lobster to cook evenly, ensuring a tender, juicy meat without becoming rubbery. Here's a simple recipe for steaming lobster to perfection.

Ingredients

(Serves 2)

  • 2 live lobsters (about 1.5 to 2 pounds each)
  • 2-3 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon salt (for the water)
  • 1-2 lemon wedges (for serving)
  • 2-3 tablespoons melted butter (for dipping, optional)
  • Fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary (optional, for flavor)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Lobsters

  • Fill a large pot with about 2-3 cups of water, or enough to cover the bottom of the pot about 2 inches deep.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of salt to the water to help enhance the flavor of the lobster. Optionally, you can add some fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary for added aroma.

2. Bring Water to a Boil

  • Bring the water to a rolling boil over high heat.

3. Add the Lobsters

  • Hold the lobsters by the body and carefully place them in the pot headfirst. It’s important to use caution as the lobsters can be a little wriggly. If you have a lid for your pot, cover it once the lobsters are in.

4. Steam the Lobsters

  • Lower the heat to medium-high to maintain a gentle boil. Steam the lobsters for about 8-10 minutes per pound. For example, if you're steaming 1.5-pound lobsters, steam for about 12-15 minutes.
  • The lobsters are done when their shells turn bright red and the meat becomes opaque. The antennae will also pull off easily.

5. Test for Doneness

  • Once cooked, remove the lobsters from the pot using tongs and place them on a plate to cool slightly. You can test the lobster’s doneness by pulling off one of the claws and checking for opaque meat inside.

6. Serve

  • Serve the lobsters with melted butter and lemon wedges on the side. A side of steamed vegetables or a fresh salad would complement the lobster perfectly.

Tips

  • Don’t Overcook: Keep an eye on the time. Overcooking lobster can make the meat tough and dry. It should feel firm but tender.
  • Butter Options: For extra flavor, you can infuse the butter with garlic, lemon zest, or herbs before serving.
  • Safety: Be sure to handle live lobsters with care. They may move slightly when placed in the pot.

This Steamed Lobster recipe gives you a simple and classic way to prepare lobster that highlights its natural flavors, making it a luxurious yet easy-to-prepare dish. 🦞🍋🧈
