Brown Butter Cauliflower Rice Recipe

Brown butter cauliflower rice is a delicious, nutty variation of cauliflower rice. The brown butter adds a rich, toasty flavor that elevates the lightness of cauliflower rice.

Ingredients

(Serves 4)

  • 1 medium head of cauliflower, grated or processed into rice-sized pieces (about 4 cups)
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (optional, for extra richness)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley or thyme for garnish (optional)
  • Lemon zest (optional, for freshness)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Cauliflower Rice

  • Remove the outer leaves and stem from the cauliflower and cut it into florets.
  • Use a food processor to pulse the cauliflower florets until they resemble rice-sized pieces. Alternatively, you can grate the cauliflower using a box grater.

2. Brown the Butter

  • In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
  • Continue cooking the butter, swirling occasionally, until it turns golden brown and has a nutty aroma (about 4-5 minutes). Be careful not to burn it.

3. Sauté the Onion and Garlic

  • If using, add the chopped onion to the skillet and sauté for about 2-3 minutes until softened.
  • Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds, stirring constantly.

4. Cook the Cauliflower Rice

  • Add the cauliflower rice to the skillet with the browned butter. Stir well to combine.
  • Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cauliflower rice is tender and lightly browned.

5. Season and Serve

  • Season with salt and pepper to taste. Optionally, garnish with fresh parsley or thyme and a sprinkle of lemon zest for a fresh kick.
  • Serve warm as a side dish to your favorite main course.

Tips

  • For Extra Flavor: Add a splash of chicken or vegetable broth while cooking the cauliflower rice for extra depth of flavor.
  • Vegan Option: Use olive oil instead of butter for a dairy-free version.
  • Customizations: You can add chopped vegetables like bell peppers or peas for extra texture and color.

This Brown Butter Cauliflower Rice is a savory, nutty twist on a low-carb classic! 🧈🌿
