 Apple Cranberry Crumble

Apple Cranberry Crumble

This Apple Cranberry Crumble is the perfect dessert for fall, combining sweet apples with tangy cranberries, all topped with a buttery, cinnamon-spiced crumble. It’s easy to make and offers a wonderful balance of flavors and textures.

Ingredients

For the Filling:

  • 4-5 medium apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch (optional, for thickening)

For the Crumble Topping:

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • ¼ cup chopped nuts (such as walnuts, pecans, or almonds, optional)

Instructions

1. Preheat the Oven:

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x9-inch baking dish or a similar-sized oven-safe dish.

2. Prepare the Filling:

In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, cranberries, granulated sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch (if using). Toss until the fruit is evenly coated. Transfer the fruit mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.

3. Make the Crumble Topping:

In a separate bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Add the cold, cubed butter and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. If desired, stir in the chopped nuts for added crunch.

4. Assemble the Crumble:

Evenly sprinkle the crumble topping over the apple and cranberry filling in the baking dish. Ensure the fruit is fully covered with the crumble.

5. Bake:

Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. If the topping starts to brown too quickly, you can cover the dish loosely with aluminum foil and continue baking.

6. Cool and Serve:

Let the apple cranberry crumble cool for 10-15 minutes before serving. This allows the filling to set slightly.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for extra indulgence.
  • Pair it with a cup of warm chai or spiced cider for a cozy fall treat.

Tips and Variations:

  • Fruit Variations: Feel free to swap in other fruits, such as pears, peaches, or blueberries, to create your own version of this crumble.
  • Make Ahead: You can assemble the crumble in advance and store it in the fridge for a few hours or overnight. Simply bake when you’re ready to serve.
  • Vegan Option: Use plant-based butter (like coconut oil or a vegan butter substitute) for the crumble topping to make it vegan-friendly.

Storage:

  • Room Temperature: Leftovers can be stored at room temperature for up to 2 days.
  • Refrigerate: Store in the fridge for up to 5 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven before serving.
  • Freeze: This crumble can be frozen for up to 3 months. Assemble the dish, cover tightly, and freeze. Bake directly from frozen, but increase the baking time by 10-15 minutes.

This Apple Cranberry Crumble is a comforting and delicious dessert that will make any gathering feel extra special! 🍏🍒
