 Scalloped Potatoes Recipe

Here’s a classic recipe for Scalloped Potatoes—a creamy, cheesy, and comforting side dish:

Scalloped Potatoes Recipe

Ingredients

  • 4 large russet or Yukon gold potatoes, thinly sliced (about 1/8 inch thick)
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk (warm)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (optional for extra richness)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp paprika (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese (divided)
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Optional: Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven:

    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. Prepare the Potatoes:

    • Wash and peel the potatoes. Slice them into thin, even slices about 1/8 inch thick using a mandoline slicer or a sharp knife.
  3. Make the Sauce:

    • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
    • Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to form a roux.
    • Gradually add the warm milk and heavy cream, whisking constantly to avoid lumps.
    • Stir in salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika. Simmer until slightly thickened.
    • Remove from heat and stir in 1 cup of cheddar cheese and all the Parmesan cheese until melted and smooth.
  4. Layer the Dish:

    • Arrange half of the potato slices in an even layer in the prepared baking dish.
    • Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes, spreading it evenly.
    • Repeat with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
  5. Top with Cheese:

    • Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese evenly on top.
  6. Bake:

    • Cover the dish with aluminum foil (to prevent excessive browning) and bake for 35-40 minutes.
    • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.
  7. Rest and Garnish:

    • Let the scalloped potatoes cool for 10 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to set.
    • Garnish with fresh thyme or parsley, if desired.

Enjoy this creamy and indulgent dish as a perfect companion to roasted meats, chicken, or fish! Would you like a variation, such as adding ham or bacon?
