Ingredients (Serves 2-4):

  • 1 cup white rice (long-grain or jasmine)
  • 2 cups water (or broth for added flavor)
  • 1/2 tsp salt (optional)
  • 1 tsp butter or oil (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the Rice:

    • Rinse the rice under cold water in a fine-mesh sieve until the water runs clear. This step helps remove excess starch and prevents the rice from being too sticky.
  2. Prepare the Microwave Dish:

    • Use a microwave-safe bowl that’s large enough to allow the rice to expand as it cooks (about 3-4 cups capacity). Add the rinsed rice to the bowl.
  3. Add Water or Broth:

    • Add 2 cups of water (or broth) to the rice. Stir in the salt and butter/oil if using.
  4. Cover and Microwave:

    • Cover the bowl loosely with a microwave-safe lid or plate. Microwave on high for 10 minutes.
  5. Reduce Power and Cook:

    • After 10 minutes, reduce the microwave power to 50% and continue to cook for another 10 minutes. If your microwave doesn't have a power setting option, simply microwave for another 10 minutes at full power, but keep an eye on the rice to prevent it from overflowing or drying out.
  6. Let It Rest:

    • After cooking, let the rice sit in the microwave, still covered, for about 5 minutes. This allows the steam to finish cooking the rice.
  7. Fluff and Serve:

    • Use a fork to fluff the rice and separate the grains. Serve immediately.

Tips:

  • For Brown Rice: The ratio of rice to water is typically 1:2.5. You’ll need to microwave it for about 25-30 minutes, checking at the halfway point.
  • For Sticky Rice: Use short-grain rice and follow the same instructions but reduce the water slightly (about 1.5 cups of water for 1 cup of rice).
  • Make sure the bowl is large enough: The rice can bubble up, so a larger bowl is important to prevent it from overflowing.
